Crochet Train, second instalment

As promised, here is the second part of the crochet train pattern. I wrote this up pretty quickly, do let me know if you spot any errors! Enjoy x

Train cars (make 4)

Materials:

Double Knit wool, any 4 colours + grey

3mm hook, or any hook to create a finished work that will hold the filling well

Yarn needle

Button approx 1cm across

Abbreviations (UK crochet terms)

rnd : round

dc : Double crochet

st : stitch

c : chain

dec : decrease

Outside (this will work up to form a cross)

ch 12, ch1 and turn

row 1-9            dc12, ch1 and turn

row 10            dc 12, ch12, ch1 and turn

row 11            dc24, ch12, ch1 and turn

row 12-21            dc36, ch1 and turn

row 22            dc 24, ch1 and turn

row 23-31            dc 12, ch1 and turn

row 32            dc 12, break thread and pull through last st to finish.

Inside (this will work up to form a cross)

ch8, ch1 and turn

row1-5            dc8, ch1 and turn

row 6                        dc8, ch8, ch1 and turn

row 7                        dc16, ch8, ch1 and turn

row 8-14            dc 24, ch1 and turn

row 15            dc16, ch1 and turn

row 16-21            dc8, ch1 and turn

row 22            dc8, break thread and pull through last st to finish.

Top (worked in rounds)

ch40

rnd 1            dc4, *dc2 in next st, dc2 in next st, dc8* 3 times, dc2 in next st, dc2 in next st, dc 4 (48)

rnd 2            dc5, *dc2 in next st, dc 2 in next st, dc10* 3 times, dc2 in next st, dc2 in next st, dc 5 (56)

rnd 3            dc6, *dc2 in next st, dc2 in next st, dc12* 3 times, dc2 in next st, dc2 in next st, dc 6 (64)

sl st, break thread and pull through last st to finish.

Wheels (make 2)

These look great when worked normally, but turned inside out. It’s a nice contrast texture.

Magic circle 4

rnd 1                        dc2 in each st (8)

rnd 2                         dc2 in each st (16)

rnd 3                        *dc2 in 1 st, dc 1* 8 times (24)

rnd 4                        *dc2 in 1 st, dc 2* 8 times (32)

rnd 5-6            dc32

rnd 7                        *dec1, dc2* 8 times (24)

rnd 8                        *dec1, dc1* 8 times (16) Stuff wheel at this point!

rnd 9                        dec8 (8)

break thread, pull through st, weave thread through final 8 st and pull tight to finish.

Coupler A (the bit that connects the engine to the cars)

ch5, ch1 and turn

row 1-3            dc5, ch1 and turn

row 4                        dc5, break thread and pull through last st to finish.

Coupler B

ch5, ch1 and turn

row 1-3            dc5, ch1 and turn

row 4                        dc1, ch3, dc into last st, ch1 and turn

row5                        dc5, break thread and pull through last st to finish.

To make up

Fold the two cross pieces into cubes without tops, and sew down seams. Line the larger cube with about 2cm of filling, and squish in the smaller cube. Sew ‘Top’ on top and ‘coupler A’ to the front (see photos for reference) and ‘coupler B’ to the back. Add the button on coupler A, and sew on the wheels.
